Facebook Image Sizes

Facebook uses different image sizes for feed posts, cover photos, profile pictures, and events. Each surface has its own crop behaviour — uploading at the exact spec keeps Facebook from auto-cropping in unhelpful ways.

Facebook image strategy

Facebook feed posts display at 1200×630 (1.91:1) when shared as link previews and 1200×1200 (1:1) when shared as standalone images. The 1.91:1 ratio matches Open Graph defaults, so external links auto-fill with the right size. Cover photos display at 851×315 on desktop but get cropped to 640×360 on mobile. Keep critical content (logo, key text) in the centre 640×360 area — anything in the side bars gets cropped on phones. Profile pictures are circular on desktop and square on most other surfaces. Upload at 320×320 minimum even though they display smaller — the platform uses the high-resolution source for retina screens and thumbnail generation. Event cover images use a wider 1920×1005 (1.91:1) crop and are the most prominent image on an event page. They scale down significantly on mobile, so keep text large and high-contrast. For ad creative, Facebook uses 1080×1080 (1:1) or 1080×1350 (4:5) for feed ads, and 1080×1920 (9:16) for Stories ads. Always export under 30MB — Facebook compresses anything larger.

Facebook sizing FAQ

What size is a Facebook cover photo?

Facebook cover photos display at 851×315 pixels on desktop and 640×360 on mobile. Upload at 851×315 with critical content in the centre 640×360 area so it survives the mobile crop.

What is the best size for a Facebook post image?

For standalone image posts, use 1200×1200 (1:1) or 1080×1350 (4:5) for the most feed real estate. For link share images, use 1200×630 (1.91:1) to match Open Graph defaults.

What size is a Facebook profile picture?

Facebook profile pictures display at 170×170 on desktop and 128×128 on mobile but should be uploaded at 320×320 or larger. They appear as circles, so centre the subject.

Why does my Facebook cover photo look stretched?

Cover photos that were uploaded at the wrong aspect ratio get stretched or letterboxed to fit 851×315. Resize your source image to exactly 851×315 before uploading.

What file format works best on Facebook?

JPEG for photos, PNG for logos and graphics with text or sharp edges. Facebook converts PNG to JPEG for some surfaces — if text quality matters, set the file to a transparent or solid colour background to keep the conversion clean.
